Every month more states are announcing progress towards legalizing marijuana for medical use. Not all states have done so, but many of those that haven’t decriminalized cannabis are now moving in that direction. Meanwhile, a change at the top of the DEA and a bill introduced to the House of Representatives indicate progress toward legalizing marijuana on a national scale.

Bill Would Allow Children to Use Medical Marijuana

On April 14, a bipartisan bill was introduced in the House of Representatives to allow children to use medical marijuana. According to Bloomberg, the bill has the support of the American Academy of Neurology and the Epilepsy Foundation. Among conditions that could be treated are cancer, epilepsy, and glaucoma.

Pennsylvania Marijuana Bill Passes Hurdle

A bill aimed at legalizing medical marijuana in Pennsylvania has passed the senate committee. Penn Live reports that the bill must still face the House. The bill has been modified to limit who can recommend cannabis treatment. Among the treatments included as eligible for medical marijuana treatment under the bill are HIV, AIDS, and glaucoma.

Head of DEA Steps Down

Michele Leonhart has resigned from her position as the head of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). Bloomberg cites marijuana legalization advocates as celebrating Leonhart’s departure. Leonhart is known for her strict anti-marijuana stance.

Georgia Allows Cannabis Oil

Georgia’s governor Nathan Deal signed legislation making the state the 36th to legalize cannabis oil. The law allows patients to use cannabis oil for the treatment of eight medical conditions. USA Today notes that the cannabis oil cannot contain more than 5 percent THC.

Poll Shows Support for Legalization

The Huffington Post reports on a study from the Pew Research Center suggesting Americans are in favor of legalizing cannabis. The Pew study found 53 percent of Americans support national legalization, with 68 percent of those in favor aged 18-34.
